The medicine of music...
Music can be one of the most powerful things in the world. It can inspire you, it can make you feel so many different emotions and it can get you through some tough times. For me, music is one of my go to gurus. As weird as that is to say, when you put a certain track on it’s just what you need.
For a short period in my life I found that I was starting to stress about everything in life. I had just finished in education but was trying to look for work. I just really didn’t know what I wanted to do. Did I want to continue in what I just studied? or did I want to try something new? I had no idea. But it was a song in particular that changed my whole outlook on everything. Daydream by Tori Kelly. I had listened to this song about a 1000 times but at that moment what she was singing made me feel like I was a feather drifting through the clouds without a worry in the world. “baby you don’t have to know exactly who you are because figuring it all out could be the best part” these lyrics helped me realise that at 19 I didn’t have to know what it was I wanted to do in life.
Artists sing about real stuff, everyday things we may go through - that’s what makes music so relatable. It gives you sense of hope when you’re having a hard time. Another song that has helped me is I AM by Jojo. This track resonates with me on so many levels. Not only is it a beautiful song but it’s a reminder for myself about self-love. There’s times in my life when I don’t feel as confident as I would like to and have doubts within myself. ‘I AM’ is a reminder that I am worthy. The song alone is so powerful. When I listen to this, it’s like I can break down any wall that stands in my way. This song speaks volumes to myself and many others.
Music will forever amaze me. Those 3 minutes of a song can change your entire mood. You can go from being angry, to chilled and then wanting to sing your heart out within the first 10 seconds of that song. (Not that I’m much of a singer). Music is truly magical thing.
