Can you be Pro Black while in an Interracial Relationship?
I am a black woman who often speaks on the issues people of colour, especially black people face. Issues such as, police brutality, cultural appropriation and of course I support the Black Lives Matter movement and I would consider myself as Pro Black.
However there’s one aspect that I haven’t mentioned. My long-term boyfriend is white.
So the question is, can a person be pro black AND in an interracial relationship?
Some believe it’s not possible. You can be pro interracial relationships, but not pro black, especially with a white partner. I have often been asked, how can a person be pro black and be in a relationship with someone who benefits from a system that oppresses black people?
However it’s not as black and white as that (no pun intended). Pro black doesn’t mean anti white or anti everyone else.
To me, personally, being pro black is about uplifting and supporting the black community, and being in an interracial relationship won’t stop a person from doing so.
A person in an interracial relationship can still buy from black businesses; speak out on the unfair treatment and critique white supremacy.
We as black people don’t like being generalised so why are we doing the same? There are many non-people of colour who are ‘woke’ to what’s happening in society and in the media, there are also many people of all races who uphold white supremacy.
The bottom line is, dating someone from another race won’t make you any less black. Being in an interracial relationship with someone from another race doesn’t invalidate your views and opinions on black related issues and lastly I’m not promoting interracial relationships I’m merely saying you can’t help who you fall in love with, be true to yourself because at the end of the day, it’s your life, so do what makes you happy!
